Words from your Area Conference Minister

Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,”
and she told them that he had said these things to her. ~ John 20:18

This year Easter falls on the last Sunday (and last day) of March. Every year since 1988, Congress or the President issues resolutions and proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” The recognition and highlighting of the contributions women have made to events in history and contemporary society, coinciding with Holy Week and Easter, seemed to me an interesting coincidence. In all four Gospels women play a significant role in the resurrection story. The women who supported and followed Jesus are present at the crucifixion, looking on from a distance till the very end. These same women are the first ones to go to the tomb the next morning.

I wonder if this Easter, on the last day of Women’s History Month, we might consider affirming and recognizing the role women had in the resurrection story and continue to have in the life of the church. One simple way to do this would be to make a small change to the traditional call and response that opens many of our Easter worship services. Perhaps this year, a woman or group of women might have the honor and blessing of standing before the congregation to proclaim,

“He is risen!”

And unlike the response of some of the disciples, who thought the women were telling an “idle tale” the congregation would affirm the women by responding, “He is risen indeed!”

May we look forward to Easter’s arrival with a renewed sense of hope, having travelled with Jesus, the Disciples and the Women through Lent and Holy Week.

Clergy Renewal

Throughout the Bible, spiritual renewal is lifted up again and again as essential to human wellbeing. Keeping the sabbath holy is one of the ten commandments. The 50-year Jubilee of rest is even extended to the earth. Jesus routinely stepped away from the demands of his ministry to pray alone. Self-care is not selfish; it is faithful.  Click above for more information.

Rumors of Our Death are Greatly Exaggerated

Thursday, April 18, 2024 at 12PM on Zoom

What do you do when your historic building takes up half a city block, but the members don’t take up even a quarter of the sanctuary? When there is plenty in the bank account but no children in Sunday School? What is a church to do when every board meeting is about the roof, the carpet, or the plumbing instead of mission, spirit, and faith formation? What would happen if you gave it all away and focused on just being the church? United Congregational Church in Worcester did just that thirteen years ago and the future is brighter than ever. Come and hear how they did it and how the spirit is still moving.  Register here.
