WORDS FROM YOUR AREA CONFERENCE MINISTER

Dear Northwest Region,

One of my seminary professors was fond of saying, “If it persists, it is probably from God.” So I pay attention when things keep coming up.

This week I heard from a number of you about the traumas you are carrying as we emerge from this phase of the Covid-19 pandemic. Some of you have done (and are doing) far too many funerals. For others, it is the way grief expresses itself in elusive joy or a dulled sense of the world. A great many are weary of the constant need for adaptation and innovation that covid-safe worship requires. Still others of you have mentioned that you feel that your bodily pains are related to carrying too much of others’ sorrow and not releasing it back to God.

At our Conference’s gathering marking a year of wandering in the wilderness of the pandemic, Debbie Ringen, our Minister of Health and Wellness, spoke about the need to empty and let go of the accumulated clutter within.

“Prayer helps us empty the clutter, and make room for God,” she said, citing the work of Joyce Rupp.

I leave you with a blessing by Joyce Rupp, with prayers for your own healing and Spring cleaning. May you throw open the doors to God’s cleansing Spirit in this Pentecost season.

May the ever-present love of family and friends sustain and support you, especially in those times when you feel alone and lonely.

May you accept your worthiness to receive self-compassion,
to give yourself permission to care for your inner and outer self as best you can.

May you be in touch with the resilience residing within you,
a strength that enables you to go on when you feel weak and vulnerable.

May you find comfort when you are hurting, and
experience a tender presence of the Holy One when you are most distressed.

May the beauty contained in gestures of kindness, and
in the loveliness of nature, bring you quiet joy.

May you give yourself to restfulness when you are weary, and
be content with inactivity when your body and spirit demand that you go slowly.

May you be patient when you want things to change, or
when difficulties appear to be insurmountable and unmanageable.

May you be released from the burdens of fear and dread, and
anything else that tries to drag your spirit into desolation.

May you discover hope in the most unexpected situations, and
store this treasure in a special corner of your heart where you can easily find it.

May you sink into the peaceful embrace of the Great Healer, and
may this peace permeate you with divine tenderness.
1

Amen and Amen,
Rev. Terry Yasuko Ogawa
Area Conference Minister, NW Region

WORSHIP RESOURCES

Radical Belonging: A Mental Health Sunday Resource for All:

Spring has finally sprung, and the additional hours of sunshine welcome us brightly into May, Mental Health Month. The United Church of Christ and The United Church of Canada honor this month by dedicating the third Sunday of May as Mental Health Sunday, a time to celebrate mental health and recommit ourselves and our congregations to being places of welcome, inclusion, support and engagement with everyone.
Radical Belonging: Mental Health Sunday Resource for All offers liturgies and education materials any congregation of any denomination can download a PDF or accessible Word version for free and use to celebrate Mental Health Sunday. It was created in prayer and partnership between the United Church of Christ Mental Health Network and The United Church of Canada, with generous contributions by Rev. Dr. Sarah Lund, the United Church of Christ’s Minister for Disabilities and Mental Health Justice. Within it, you will find liturgy that challenges the systemic sins that create “otherness” and ableism, resources that share the stories of people living with mental illness and disabilities, and words of grace and celebration for the opportunities we have as the Body of Christ to love, care for and accept one another.

DISCIPLESHIP OPPORTUNIES AT A GLANCE

Designing Hybrid Faith Formation for the Post-Pandemic World
June 10, 7:00 - 8:30 PM

Fuel For Hybrid Faith Formation Ministry

(An online presentation for faith formation with all ages) For decades the church and faith formation have relied on in-person, fixed-time gatherings, events, and programming offered in physical spaces. The pandemic disrupted this “default” model, and pushed us to experiment with new models. Hybrid models of church and faith formation integrate in-person gatherings at church or in family groups or small group meetings with online content with a rich menu of faith forming experiences. Click on the link above for more information and to register.

Youth @ Synod

This summer the United Church of Christ will host a virtual General Synod gathering on July 11-18.  Delegates from all over the country will convene for worship and discussion of resolutions.  Planners have also been busy preparing special parallel programs for youth and young adults. Youth @ Synod is a life-changing experience of the wider church for teens ages 13-18 and past participants name the powerful impact of the event.
