A Note from Your ACM

While much attention was focused on the Boston Marathon on Monday, another marathon took place in the city last weekend: The 26.TRUE Marathon.

According to organizers, “26.TRUE is an unsanctioned marathon specifically designed to amplify and celebrate the culture and diversity of the neighborhoods that make up the City of Boston.”

Starting and finishing in Roxbury, 26.TRUE guides runners through over a dozen of Boston’s neighborhoods, including JP, Roslindale, Mattapan, Dorchester, and Chinatown. While nearly 30,000 runners gathered on Monday for the traditional marathon, a more modest group of about 200 assembled on Saturday for this journey through some of the city’s often-overlooked areas.

There are various ways to view “the Christian Journey,” but one perspective that resonates with me is to see our faith as a continuous journey of following God down less-traveled paths. 26.TRUE serves as a reminder to me of how God invites us to embark on new journeys, often down less-traveled routes, to be transformed by the experience. We are transformed by the unfamiliar places we explore, the new people we encounter, and the collective experience of journeying together.

As I have yet to develop a desire to run a marathon, you’re unlikely to find me participating in either Boston or 26.TRUE. Nevertheless, I do hope and pray that God will always invite me to explore new paths and undertake metaphorical races that broaden my perspectives. I extend the same hope and prayer to you and to all the congregations in our region. May we remain attentive, with open eyes and ears, and prepared to journey down new paths. Ultimately, may our lives be enriched and transformed by embracing such opportunities.

PS: My favorite part of 26.TRUE? Every runner gets to break through tape at the finish line as onlookers cheer. A wonderful image of the Kingdom of God.

You can read the 26.TRUE Participants Guide here. You can read the Boston Globe story here.

With love and thanks,

Alex

Clergy Renewal

Throughout the Bible, spiritual renewal is lifted up again and again as essential to human wellbeing. Keeping the sabbath holy is one of the ten commandments. The 50-year Jubilee of rest is even extended to the earth. Jesus routinely stepped away from the demands of his ministry to pray alone. Self-care is not selfish; it is faithful.  Click above for more information.

Rumors of Our Death are Greatly Exaggerated

Thursday, April 18, 2024 at 12PM on Zoom

What do you do when your historic building takes up half a city block, but the members don’t take up even a quarter of the sanctuary? When there is plenty in the bank account but no children in Sunday School? What is a church to do when every board meeting is about the roof, the carpet, or the plumbing instead of mission, spirit, and faith formation? What would happen if you gave it all away and focused on just being the church? United Congregational Church in Worcester did just that thirteen years ago and the future is brighter than ever. Come and hear how they did it and how the spirit is still moving.  Register here.

Modeling a Restorative Justice Circle
Monday, April 29, 6-7:30pm

Rev. Mark Seifried of the Restorative Justice Task Team will facilitate a sample restorative justice circle, demonstrating its use in a local church. In this scenario, a church council has decided that the best way to balance the budget is to cut the music budget in half. How does the church move through the conflict that has become painful, build trust, come to agreements that are amenable to the parties, and move forward in a positive direction?

WISE and Mental Health Month - May is Mental Health Month

Masking and Loneliness by Debbie Ringen, Minister of Health and Wellness
The days of constantly wearing a mask in the presence of others during the Covid- 19 pandemic may be significantly fewer today and may only be continuing for some, however, I wonder if we as human beings are still wearing at least one of our masks. Read more here, Masking and Loneliness.docx.
