The New Science of Spirituality

I just finished reading Dr. Lisa Miller’s most recent book, The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest for an Inspired Life, and I’ll warn you up front — I am even more convinced that we need to include young children in as much of the life of the congregation as possible. Please hear me out:

I read her first book, The Spiritual Child: The New Science on Parenting for Health and Lifelong Thriving, several years ago and it changed the focus of my ministry. This new book, written in 2021, provides updates on her research into the profound effect spirituality has on mental health.

Multi-Church Youth Ministry Models

Youth ministry can be an uphill battle, especially for small churches which have only a handful of youth. COVID-19 presented challenges of connection and continuity that caused many churches to rethink their approach.  One hopeful solution for creating larger groups is the shift to collaborative ministry.

Rev. Jack Davidson, pastor at Spring Glen UCC in Hamden, CT convened a virtual meeting of clergy and youth leaders in late January to discuss various models for multi-church youth ministry. The meeting was a forum to share successes, struggles, and creative ideas for programming.

Faith Formation Leadership Program

SNEUCC's Faith Formation Leadership Program is for anyone with a passion for faith formation and youth ministries - both lay leaders and authorized ministers. Our classes are interactive Zoom sessions that are not recorded for distribution, and the registration deadline is two days before each interactive session. Register for all eight classes required to receive certification and receive a $25 refund!

'A Black Theology of Liberation' Book Study

February 28th, 2023
12:00pm to 1:00pm

Join SNEUCC's Faith Formation Team for a Zoom-based book study of a seminal 20th century theology text, A Black Theology of Liberation, by the esteemed James H. Cone. The hour-long session will include an overview of the text's themes and subject matter through the use of discussion and media. Bible study groups, Racial Justice committees, and participants beyond Southern New England are welcome to take part!

Please note: participants are suggested to have read or listened to the full work (available in physical form via Orbis Books or audiobook form via Audible) prior to this one-session book study.

Lenten Chapel of the Heart

All are welcome to join a virtual devotional time on five Wednesday mornings during Lent. Clergy, faith formation leaders, and lay leaders are invited to participate. The SNEUCC Faith Formation Team will lead the sessions of prayer, reflection, and music which are 45 minutes in length.

Youth @ Synod

Teens from all over the country will participate in worship, attend plenary sessions and hearings, and observe the resolution process in action. Youth @ Synod is a wonderful opportunity to engage in justice issues and nurture advocacy skills.  

The Southern New England Conference is sponsoring a trip to Youth @ Synod for young leaders ages 14 to 18 who want to connect with other teens and experience the vibrant diversity of the wider church.

Dr. Verena Brown, pediatrician and educator who specializes in cases of child physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect, will join us for a discussion about child abuse and mandatory reporting. Dr. Brown is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Executive Committee of the Council on Child Abuse and Neglect.
