Rocky Hill (CT) Church Celebrates Creation and Creates Partnerships

On Earth Day, Saturday April 24, the Green Team of Rocky Hill Congregational Church (CT) hosted an Earth Day Expo, an event the planners hope will be an annual event. Following guidelines for masking and distancing, the event included local political leaders, environmental groups, and entertainers to encourage people to protect God's creation.

Featured at the event were several local and state leaders, including Rocky Hill Mayor Lisa Marotta, deputy Mayor Edward Charamut, State Senator Matt Lessor, State Representative Kerry Wood, and Joe Buonanatta from the CT Green Bank. These leaders spoke about town and state initiatives such as mulching for local food pantry gardens, renewable energy programs, and clean energy job creation.

One highlight of the day was a performance by Cyril the Sorcerer, an award winning environmental "infotainer" who teaches about recycling, water conservation, and sustainability through magic and storytelling. Music for the day was provided by local artist and RHCC member Liz Reed.

The Expo included booths from local and statewide organizations. Local church members also had tables where guests received packets of seeds, bumper stickers, information on recycling. The Rocky Hill Youth Group sold rain barrels, with installation, as a fundraiser and a way to connect with the community.

"Our Earth Day EXPO has been the culmination of a deep commitment on the part of a small nucleus of concerned and active members and friends of the church, to make space for the new things we are called to do on behalf of the natural world, particularly in light of the devastation of climate change," said Rev. Nada Sellers, Pastor of Rocky Hill Congregational Church UCC. "The EXPO became a marvelous new way to collaborate with local and regional partners, to build or renew relationships with town leaders, and to send a message that RHCC is on the move in finding ways to live the call to care for the earth as stewards of God’s amazing creation. We welcome new connections that help us to share God’s love and intentions for this amazing planet!"

The RHCC Green Team is already planning future events including next year's expo. The hope to host smaller events throughout the year and hope to be present at the Rocky Hill Farmer's Market during the summer months.
